Chapter Fifteen
The sun took on a tired golden glow as the evening wore on. Tinesi was over at the shop with Frost and Mist, trying to learn the ropes.
I headed over to the Market District. There was a nice tavern that served some bomb-ass mutton. They were always crowded so I wanted to reserve a table for the four of us later on that night.
I figured a late dinner would be fitting, since Iâd have to go out around midnight to try to bend Demonaliaâs ear again.
I made the reservation â I greased the hostess into giving us a nice table with a few extra gold coins â then noticed a hooded figure was following me.
In fact, I was pretty sure that Iâd spotted that same hooded figure when I left the Whisperwood Enchantment Shop.
I thought about that strange ripple Mother Gaia had mentioned and quickly made a save point.
<SAVE POINT REACHED!>
I had no weapons on me, which was slightly annoying. Then again, living a quiet life as an enchanter didnât necessitate me traipsing around fully armed and armored.
I was about to look around for a handy weapon â broomstick, anyone? â but then lost my patience.
âScrew this,â I thought, then just turned around and marched toward the hooded figure. If this guy was indeed a threat, Iâd just restore the last save point and take it from there.
The hooded figure tensed a bit as I approached, but didnât flee or make any other sudden movements.
Instead, the figure stepped slowly into a nearby alley, where the shadows were thick and the sunlight couldnât reach.
Except the figure didnât do this in an attempt to evade me. He did it slowly, giving me plenty of time to follow.
When I followed him into the alley, I saw it wasnât a âhimâ at all. Demonalia pulled back her hood and smiled apologetically.
âOh, itâs you,â I said.
âForgive my trickery,â she said. âI wanted to talk to you at your enchantment shop, but you were stepping out just as I was approaching.â
âYou could have just said hello,â I said.
She looked away bashfully. âI know,â she said. âI just lost my nerve, thatâs all.â
âWell, I hope I donât come across as unfriendly,â I said.
She raised her red eyes to mine. âThatâs not what I meant,â she smiled. âItâs just, Iâm not used to folks around this city being very receptive toward me. Youâre pretty much the first. Iâm just trying to get used to being able to call someone a friend, thatâs all.â
I smiled. âSo weâre friends,â I said.
âAfter what you did for me, we are absolutely friends,â she said. She scowled. âThe Children of Mother Gaia.â She punctuated her disgust by spitting on the pavement. âBloody hypocrites.â
âYeah, I donât like them either,â I said. âBut whatâs up? Why were you coming over to chat?â
âI decided that I owed you an explanation,â Demonalia said. âAbout why I refused to let the Summer Kingdom use my factory.â
I winced a little. Iâd been hoping that she had changed her mind by now.
